Barcodes |
CDRUK can create barcodes, such as the EAN 13, to add to your packaging. It should be noted however that we cannot issue you with any barcode numbers - simply create the barcode from a number that you hold. In order to obtain a barcode number you will need to become a member of GS1 UK, details of their services and contact details are set out below. |

GS1 UK is the local affiliate of GS1 Global, a not-for-profit organisation that provides global standards and solutions to improve the efficiency and visibility of supply chains. The GS1 System is the most widely used supply chain standards system in the world spanning 145 countries. The standards govern the use of bar codes, business messages, RFID and Global Data Synchronisation.
Why join GS1 UK ? The GS1 System is a global standard which enables efficient and cost effective supply chain management. You need to become a member of GS1 UK in order to licence the unique identification numbers used in GS1 bar codes (such as the EAN 13). GS1 numbers are unique and ensure that items can be tracked and traced throughout the supply chain. There are a variety of membership types to suit the size of your organisation and requirements.
Do I have to get my numbers from GS1? GS1 UK is your link to the largest Supply Chain Industry Association in the world. GS1 UK members can only use GS1 Numbers for their own products. They are prohibited from issuing or on selling the numbers to other companies. If a company offers you a GS1 Number for a bar code they could be breaking GS1 UK's membership terms and conditions. This could lead to the termination of their membership. If you obtain your numbers from somewhere other than GS1 UK, you may be risking your products being refused by retailers and pulled off the shelves. |
Join online at www.gs1uk.org or call the helpdesk on 020 7655 9001 Soon after joining you will receive a company prefix number and a Membership Pack that explains how to create numbers to identify products and you will also have access to ongoing support and a range of services offered by GS1 UK.
Global trade item numbers (GTINs) are most commonly employed to identify products. The most widespread GTIN is 13-digits long. They are always shown below the bar code. A typical example is the EAN-13 bar code. You create 13-digit numbers using your company prefix number. Each company prefix number is unique which ensures that all the numbers you create using it will be unique too. You create these 13 digit numbers by appending the item reference digits to your company prefix number and by calculating a final check digit. More details are available at www.gs1uk.org and in the Membership Pack you receive on joining. Once you have allocated a particular number to identify your product you will need to order the right bar code and implementation tools. These are supplied by specialist companies from GS1 UK's Solution Partner community who are able to assist you and can be accessed online from www1.gs1uk.org/pls/live/p_wwv_sp_finder_page1 CDRUK can generate barcodes from the numbers you supply us with, and this can be added to your artwork and will be shown in position on a proof, sent for your approval prior to the production of your discs and packaging. |
